Tiger Woods is facing an uncertain future off the golf course after his DUI arrest in Florida

Tiger Woods got out of jailand into the passenger seat of a dark SUV, his face as vacant as his mug shot as he was driven away to a future again filled withso much uncertainty.

Tiger Woods Crash

The next step legally is facing charges of driving while intoxicated, damage to property and refusal to submit to a urine test, which led to him spending eight hours Friday in the Martin County jail some 15 miles from his home on Jupiter Island, Florida.

His manager at Excel Sports, Mark Steinberg, did not respond to a request for comment Saturday on Woods' arrest.

As for golf, this comes at a bad time for the sport's most influential player.

Woods had said earlier in the week he was trying to get in shape forthe Masterson April 9-12, though that was looking unlikely. He turned 50 at the end of last year. "This body, it doesn't recover like it did when it was 24, 25," Woods said earlier this week.

He also was days away from a decision on whether to be the next U.S. Ryder Cup captain for the 2027 matches in Ireland. Two officials from the PGA of America did not immediately return phone calls from The Associated Press seeking comment.

And on April 5, he is scheduled to be in Augusta, Georgia, with Masters chairman Fred Ridley to celebratea project at "The Patch,"the nickname of a municipal golf course where Woods' design team created a short course to go along with a major upgrade to the public course.

Woods also is the central figure as chairman of the Future Competition Committee that is reshaping the PGA Tour model of tournaments. Tour CEO Brian Rolapp predicted meaningful progress this summer.

The PGA Tour declined to comment on Woods' arrest.

Now everything is on hold while Woods sorts through his second arrest in the last nine years, and hisfourth car crash dating to 2009.

Woods waited until the summer of 2024 before deciding against being Ryder Cup captain for the 2025 matches in New York. The Associated Press reported in Februarythe PGA of America had a soft deadline of the end of March for him to decide this time.

The PGA of America already is under scrutiny because ofthe unruly fan behavior at Bethpage Parklast September, and this is not a time for another misstep. One person with knowledge of the process said the PGA of America has a backup plan of four potential candidates for the Ryder Cup committee to review if Woods declines — or if the PGA of America moves on.

Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek said Woods' Land Rover was going at a "high speed" when it clipped the trailer of a pressure cleaning truck and flipped on its side. Woods was not hurt and climbed out through the passenger window. The driver of the truck was not injured, either.

"Had there been somebody moving in the opposite direction, we would not be having a conversation saying there were no injuries," Budensiek said. "This could've been a lot worse."

Budensiek said investigators on the scene believe Woods had taken some kind of medication or drug. He described Woods as lethargic and said the golfer agreed to a breath test that showed "triple zeroes" — no sign of alcohol. By declining the urine test, the sheriff said, officials will never get "definitive results" about what caused the impairment.

That was consistent withhis 2017 arrest on a DUI charge in Florida, when Woods was found asleep behind the wheel of a car with the engine running, the right blinker on, two flat tires and light damage to the driver's side.

Woods said it was a bad mix of medication.Toxicology reports later revealedthe active ingredient for marijuana, two painkillers, a sleep drug and an anti-anxiety drug. There was no alcohol.

The pain medication has been standard fare for golf's most celebrated — and wounded — player.

After four knee surgeries — the last one a week after he won the U.S. Open with shredded knee ligaments and two stress fractures — Woods had four back surgeries in four years (2014 through 2017) only to returnto win the Masters in 2019in one of golf's most astonishing comebacks.

And then camethe most serious crash of all, in February 2021. His SUV was going 84 to 87 mph (135 to 140 kph) in an area with a speed limit of 45 mph (72 kph) when it veered off a coastal road in the Los Angeles suburbs, rolled down a hill and smacked into a tree.

He was not cited and Los Angeles authorities did not seek a warrant for blood samples. The injuries to his right leg and ankle were extensive — Woods later said amputation was considered — and it was remarkable he even returned to playing.

Woods has never been the same as a golfer since that accident. He has played 11 tournaments in the five years since that crash. Of the four times he finished 72 holes, he hasn't been closer than 16 shots of the winner. He shares the PGA Tour's all-time record with 82 wins.

But he remains a huge draw. Woods decided tocompete Tuesday night in the finals of his indoor TGL league, and viewership spiked to nearly 1 million, the second-highest rating behind Woods making his TGL debut.

He made his public debut at age 2 on "The Mike Douglas Show" and has been in the spotlight ever since, setting records that are likely never to be broken. He remains a central figure in golf to this day, and the scrutiny is as great as ever with so much on his plate.

Tiger Woods charged with DUI after crash in Florida, authorities say

Golf legendTiger Woodswas charged with DUI after a vehicle crash in Jupiter, Florida, on Friday afternoon, the local sheriff said.

CBS News

The incident happened when a pickup truck towing a small trailer was pulling into a driveway and saw a Land Rover overtaking him at "high speeds," Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek told reporters during a news conference. While they didn't know the speed of the vehicle, Budensiek said the area has a 30 mph speed limit.

The Land Rover, driven by Woods, swerved at the last minute to avoid a collision but ended up clipping the back end of the trailer, flipping onto the driver's side of the vehicle and sliding, Budensiek said, adding that the vehicle didn't roll completely over but slid up the road for a "decent space" before it came to a stop.

Woods, 50, was able to crawl out of the vehicle on the passenger side, and neither driver suffered injuries, the sheriff said. There were no passengers in the Land Rover.

Woods showed signs of impairment, Budensiek said, and did several roadside tests. Woods took a Breathalyzer test and "blew triple zeroes" but refused a urine test, the sheriff said.

Experts who evaluated Woods after the crash "believe from on scene that he was not impaired on alcohol. They believe it was some type of medication or drug," Budensiek said. No drugs or medication were found in the vehicle, he said.

Woods was arrested and charged with DUI, property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test, Budensiek said.

Starting at 3 p.m. local time, he was jailed for eight hours, per a Florida statute that requires it following a DUI arrest. He was held at the Martin County Jail, though not with the general population. He was released on bail late Friday night, according to The Associated Press.

Jupiter Island police had initially responded to the scene before calling the sheriff's office for assistance, Budensiek said, noting that the police are "fully capable" but that the sheriff's office "has more repetitions."

The Martin County Fire Rescue Department told CBS News it responded to a motor vehicle accident in the Jupiter Island area around 1:30 p.m. The department could not share details on patient information due to privacy laws, a spokesperson said.

Woods recently participated in a match at the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, on Tuesday.

Woods, who has won 15 majors throughout his golf career, has been weighing whether or not he could play the Masters in April, according to The Associated Press. Woods had his seventh back surgery in September 2025, and had ruptured his Achilles tendon in March of that year.

In 2021, Woods wasseriously injuredin arollover crashin Los Angeles. Authorities said at the time that the SUV he was driving careened downhill, traveling several hundred feet and flipping multiple times before landing on a hillside in Rolling Hills Estates, a Los Angeles suburb. Woods was trapped inside the SUV, forcing first responders to use tools to pry open the windshield to pull him out.

Woods' vehicle had been traveling between 84 and 87 mph in an area with a 45 mph speed limit, Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said at the time. Theprimary causeof that crash in 2021 "was driving at a speed unsafe for the road conditions and the inability to negotiate the curve of the roadway," the sheriff said.

Woods was also arrested on aDUI charge in 2017when Florida police found him asleep behind the wheel of his car. Woods said later he had taken a bad mix of painkillers.

The Phillies nearly tied it again in the 10th.

Bryce Harper snapped an 0 for 8 start to the season with a broken-bat, two-out single to right off Tyler Alexander that made it 5-4. Alec Bohm popped up against Alexander, who earned the save, to end the game.

Wyatt Langford singled off Phillies closer Jhoan Duran to open the 10th that sent the automatic runner to third. Duran (0-1) uncorked a wild pitch that scored Brandon Nimmo and allowed an RBI single to Andrew McCutchen for a 5-3 lead.

Chris Martin (1-0) got one out in the ninth for the win.

The Phillies tied the game with three unearned runs in the ninth aided by Burger's second error of the game at first base.

With two outs, the Phillies put two runners on and chased reliever Robert Garcia. Martin's first pitch to former Ranger Adolis Garcia was popped into foul territory and dropped by Burger. Garcia took advantage of his second chance and ripped an RBI double to left. Brandon Marsh followed with a two-RBI single to right that tied the game at 3-all.

Seager hit a two-out solo homer in the first off Phillies starter Aaron Nola.

Burger homered for the second straight game, this one a two-run shot in third off the left field foul pole.

Jacob Latz was pressed into action when the Rangers scratched two-time Cy Young Award winnerJacob deGromhours ahead of his scheduled start because of neck stiffness. deGrom will instead start Tuesday or Wednesday at Baltimore.

Latz tossed three-hit ball over four shutout innings.

The Phillies did get good news down on the farm.

Zack Wheeler, their ace who wasn't pitched since August because of a blood clot found near his right shoulder and thoracic outlet surgery, threw 38 pitches over three shutout innings for Triple-A Lehigh Valley. He walked one and struck out three.

Phillies reliver Orion Kerkering (right hamstring) struck out one in a scoreless inning in his first rehab appearance in Triple-A.
